Obdlink LX BT killing car battery
« on: October 12, 2017, 11:02:40 AM »
Just bought an obdlink lx and installed it. 4-5 days later my car battery was dead. Obdlink was the only new installation, no problem prior. Removed all accessories and tried again. Same results. Obdlink lx is not shutting down after any amount of time. Bt and power leds illuminated at all times.

By default the OBDLink LX will go to sleep after 10 minutes of being disconnected from Bluetooth.

What apps have you used?  Some apps change the sleep settings.  If the sleep settings have been changed, a factory reset will set them back to default.

Is the app closed or still open?  If the app is still open it may cause the OBDLink LX to stay awake.

How are you checking on the OBDLink LX?  Make sure you do not open the door to check on your OBDLink LX, as that may wake it up.  If the OBDLink LX is not visible from the outside, try to use a strategically placed mirror or even a piece of paper.

If it still is not going to sleep, perform a factory reset.

I use strictly the obdlink app, as I tend to believe the folks who made the hardware have a better idea about what it needs for software. My tablet is setup to shut off after 1 minute if not on usb power regardless of app settings, as it lives mounted in my car for the sole purpose of running the obdlink software. I check on the LX from the outside through a window with the front seats laid back(tan interior plastic reflects very well in a dark garage). I will attempt a reset and see what happens. Thanks!

*Update* resetting seems to have worked. The lights are shutting off and the power is led is indicating “sleep” mode. Thanks for the assistance.

Hello, same probleme here!

Car: Toyota Auris Hybrid (like Prius 3), Battery 12V 35Ah.
The car was not starting after 1 week without driving.

OBDLink LX Firmware-Version 4.3.0, Release Date: August 17, 2017

Android-BT-Software used:
--------------------------
Hybrid Assistant
Hybrid Reporter
Tire Assistant
Dr. Prius (not realy working)
Приус Доктор [PRIUS DOCTOR] (Cyrillic HighVoltage-Battery-Tool, working :) )
OBDLink [OBD car diagnostics] (rarely used)

1.) How can i perform a factory reset?
Ok, found it: Press the button on the LX for 15 sec.

2.) Then i will check the software, one after the other about "change of sleep settings" and let you know who did the mess!
Maybe i can reproduce this error!??!

Hello Brian, here is my follow up:

1. It is freezing cold in germany ("Winter is here").

2. I am doing a 2-week-monitoring of my car-battery, week 1 with OBDLink LX, week 2 without the battery drainer.
This test will last until next week.
(2 weeks ago i did not know what causes the empty battery).

3. As you mentioned here: ( https://www.scantool.net/forum/index.php?topic=12888.0 )

Here is the list of default sleep settings displayed by STSLCS command.
   CTRL MODE:  NATIVE
   PWR_CTRL:   LOW PWR = LOW
   UART SLEEP: ON,  600 s
   UART WAKE:  ON,  0-0 us
   EXT INPUT:  LOW = SLEEP
EXT SLEEP:  OFF, LOW FOR 3000 ms
EXT WAKE:   ON,  HIGH FOR 40 ms
   VL SLEEP:   ON,  <13.00V FOR 10800 s
   VL WAKE:    OFF, >13.20V FOR 1 s
VCHG WAKE:  ON,  0.20V IN 1000 ms

I checked my (adapter) sleep-settings before resetting it:

   same as above, except

   UART SLEEP: OFF,  600 s
   VL SLEEP:   OFF,  <13.00V FOR 10800 s
   VL WAKE:    ON, >13.20V FOR 1 s
VCHG WAKE:  OFF,  0.20V IN 1000 ms

4. I will do a factory reset and test the Android-Apps next week, as i am not using the OBDLink till then.

Hi Leo,

It looks like one of the apps changed the sleep settings.  Having UART SLEEP and VL SLEEP in the "OFF" state would definitely cause the OBDLink LX not to go to sleep.

Hello Brian, you are right! ;)

I have done a factory reset, now the sleep settings have changed to default and look good.

I will end my Battery-test at the weekend, as you can see below, then i will check my used Android-Apps.

Maybe the error was caused by a crashed progamme or phone? Maybe i used Torque Pro some ages ago, not sure.

I will let you /us know next week.

Hello Brian, here is the summary of my software test regarding the sleep-settings of the OBDLink LX adapter.

The software i have used the last month is working fine and is not changing the sleep-settings of the adapter.
Hybrid Assistant 1.112.4, Hybrid Reporter (ops, no bluetooth app), Tire Assistant 3.2, Dr. Prius 1.3, Приус Доктор [Prius Doctor] 1.12 and OBDLink [OBD car diagnostics] 4.6.0.

I don't know when i used this App for the last time (many, many month ago).
The bad guy i found is Torque Pro 1.8.199, it sets the parameters as seen above:
   UART SLEEP: OFF,  600 s
   VL SLEEP:   OFF,  <13.00V FOR 10800 s
   VL WAKE:    ON, >13.20V FOR 1 s
VCHG WAKE:  OFF,  0.20V IN 1000 ms

The Torque-OBD-settings where not changed: "OBD2 Adapter Settings" -> "ScanTool.net (OBDLink) Power Savings" was not enabled.
I don't need Torque any more and will not test what this parameter does, if enabled.

Ok, one more factory reset and the OBD(Link)-world is fine again. ;)

Yes, Torque changes our default sleep settings.  You have to select Power Savings to change them back.

The adapter did not go into sleep mode. in the settings Torque set the mode of energy conservation. Torgue is deleted and I use OBDlink. Now the adapter has stopped waking up. At factory settings reset. Does not help.

Please power cycle the OBDLink LX.  What is the state of each LED upon power up?

Power -
OBD -
Host -
Bluetooth -
Is the blue LED flashing fast or slow?  1 Hz or 10 Hz?  Does it change when you push the button once?

Very interesting post...
I checked also on my obdlink and I confirm this...
In next version of Hybridassistant, we will detect this and send a warning splashscreen in case of wrong config for sleepmode...

Question to STN-BRIAN: if we change, by program, the parameters STLU & STSLVL , is it necessary to unplug & plug back the interface to activate these settings?
