ELM327 OBD2 CAN-BUS Scan Tool Interface Scanner elm~327 purchased on eBay (Item #220113761017) from Honk Kong on May 21, 2007 (Delivered June 7, 2007).

The total cost of the unit is $111 ($88 + $23 shipping).

Upon inspection, it was found that:

  • The scan tool does not power up
  • There are no LEDs
  • CD contains only two files --; ScanTool.net v1.13 (Win) and a ScanMaster demo.
  • There are no USB drivers provided with the unit

The layout of the circuit appears haphazard. Parts are mounted in bizarre ways to accomodate incorrect footprints. The circuit is covered in flux and fingerprints, suggesting sloppy hand assembly. There are solder bridges in different parts of the circuit, which may explain why the circuit does not power up (the 7805 regulator is not supplying +5V to the rest of the circuit). Apparently, the manufacturer kept the cost down by skipping the QA test.

Feedback indicates this is not an isolated incident:

seems not to work. doesnt install properly. seller hasnt replied to messages[/b]

The seller is no longer a registered eBay user.

Hi,

I've seen a supplier selling Elmscan 5, from Hong Kong, on Ebay. Is this stuff genuine? I would have thought, considering the price of ELM chips alone, even in quantity discount, that they could not sell it at £40 including international shipping.

Hello,

Most likely, the scan tools they are selling are not genuine.  If they were using genuine ELM chips, they most likely would not be able to sell their scan tools at that price.  Unfortunately, I could not tell you for sure, without actually seeing it.  Can you provide a link?

Thank you,

Terri

Well, I bought a used "ELM327" off a seller on ebay.  It was not a store but an individual that claims it worked on his cars....Needless to say, it would not work on my 2003 lexus and failed to connect to my computer.  It had one single green LED light that blinked once when I would insert it into the ODB2 port and would not stay on or blink again.  I looked at the chip inside and it had a label:   PIC18F2480

Would this cause it to not work at all......HuhHuh

thanks

Well, I have so far been a lone voice of late on this forum trying to convince people not to buy these clones and if you look at the home page of my website www.Motorscan.us, you'll see what I mean. I actually posted an article about this on the forum a few weeks ago but it was removed. Political correctness seems to win over what is the real truth.

Its good that over the past few days there have been more people complaining but I don't know what effect it will have as people seem to be interested in price alone and won't pay the extra for a quality product with the " legal " Elm327 chip. What the Chinese have done is to copy the embedded code from the Elm Electronics chip and write it to a similar IC and claim that it's an Elm327 chip.

Hi!

Recently I bought ELM327 interface from HongKong, China.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220190027340

This interface does not work with any car I tested.
Interface uses PIC18F258 without ELM sticker and in ELM Electronic say that they were never used this PIC.

Ryan,

Most likely it's a clone. Genuine ElmScan 5s are not built in Hong Kong.

I think I got a clone also.  It looks nice from outside, but it don't work with the laptop.  All I get is a Power on light.  and more errors than you can stand.  Not any directions at all.  Just wasted $50 to Hong Kong.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Sad Unfortunately, the situation is all too common. If you bought the unit from eBay, you should try to get your money back from the seller, and post negative feedback.

Another alternative is to turn it in for credit toward a purchase of a genuine ElmScan 5. Please contact our Customer Service for details.

Best regards,
